How to pack a moving truck: a loading plan

Moving Unpacked · How these guides are prepared

Plan the loading order while your belongings are still in the house. The goal is a stable, secured load within the vehicle’s limits, with the things you need first still reachable. This guide does not replace the rental company’s instructions.

Check the vehicle and the path

Read the instructions for the actual vehicle before loading. Find its payload limit and inspect the loading equipment and attachment points. Confirm who can operate the ramp or lift and where helpers will stand.

Walk the route from room to truck. Remove trip hazards, protect vulnerable edges, and agree on clear directions. If a piece requires more strength, equipment, or control than your group has, arrange suitable help.

Plan three loading groups

Group belongings before the truck arrives so you do not repeatedly move the same boxes. The precise arrangement depends on the vehicle and furniture; keep weight distribution and securing points in view as the load grows.

GroupPreparation
Heavy and sturdyProtect surfaces, check lifting needs, and plan a low, stable position.
Stackable boxesKeep dense boxes low and avoid crushing weaker boxes.
Fragile and open-firstProtect from movement and keep essential items separately accessible.

Secure the load as you build it

Use the provider’s load-securing instructions and equipment suitable for the load. Do not assume tightly stacked boxes are secured. Check each section before the next one blocks access.

Keep the load balanced and respect payload limits. Do not use a capacity calculator as a weight check. Avoid placing heavy belongings on fragile furniture or relying on thin furniture parts as structural supports.

Example: unloading into an apartment

Suppose the new apartment has one usable elevator and a narrow entrance. Put destination room labels on two faces of every box, and assign a staging space that leaves the building’s access clear. Before carrying the sofa upstairs, check its dimensions against the whole route.

Keep the bed hardware in a labeled bag with the bed parts, while the tool needed to assemble it stays in the essentials bag. That avoids searching the load at the end of the day.

Before the truck moves

Check that doors can close without forcing the load. Follow the operator’s process for stowing the ramp and checking the vehicle. Keep passengers in designated seats.

At the destination, assess what may have shifted before opening and unloading. Unload at a pace that keeps the walkway clear. Save photographs and inventory notes if anything appears damaged.

  • Keep documents, medication, keys, and valuables with you.
  • Confirm the return location, time, and fuel instructions.
  • Leave enough time for a final room-by-room check at the old home.
